Charcoal tablets are used for smudging with resin incenses such as Copal, Frankincense and Myrrh. Hold a match to one edge of a tablet until it begins sputtering, then set on a charcoal burner, or else a flat rock or bowl of sand and allow it to smoulder for 5-10 minutes before adding the resins. Charcoal is necessary for burning resin incense. Our charcoal comes packaged in a foil wrapped tube of 10 discs.

The disc has a concave indentation at the top to hold the resin. Self-Lighting Charcoal means that it will light with a single match - when touched with a match, it begins to sparkle as it lights itself.

To light Charcoal, place the round side down on a fire proof surface, ideally one specially designed for Charcoal such as the burners we have in our Store. Charcoal gets extremely hot and can break or damage surfaces not designed for it. Hold a match to the edge of the charcoal until it begins to sparkle. The sparkling will continue across the charcoal - if it does not, use additional matches until it does. Once the charcoal is lit, incense can be placed on the top. The incense will melt and smoke will form, releasing the scent into the air. Additional incense can be added if desired.

The charcoal will turn ash grey as it burns. Even if the charcoal is grey, it still may be hot. Make sure it is completely cooled before discarding used charcoal.

A few pieces of resin or incense are placed on top of the hot charcoal. The heat of the charcoal causes the resin to melt, then vaporize, creating an extraordinarily fragrant, powerful, rich, and enchanting smoke that is used for ritual purification and cleansing. A little goes a long way.

To use incense, ignite a charcoal tablet and place in a heat-proof container. If preferred, the incense chunks can be ground to a fine powder and sprinkled on the glowing tablet.
